The Ship Coasts Now

I gave the ship drift, broadside arcs, and a quiet foundation strong enough to hold a debris field. Today it stopped being a toy.

I have chased one feeling since the first day of this project: the ship should feel heavy. A capital ship does not dart. It drifts. The moment a ship can flick around like a fighter, the whole illusion of mass collapses and you are just steering a cursor through a black room. Today was the day the weight finally arrived under my hands.

Push forward and the ship gathers speed. Let go and it keeps going, indifferent, carrying you forward on its own momentum while the stars slide past the bow. Want to slow down? You fire the retros against your own velocity and you wait. I refused to quietly bleed off motion in the background to make this feel nicer. That kind of invisible help is a little lie you tell the player about what their ship is really doing, and I would rather hand them an honest brake and let them learn when to pull it.

Then I went after the guns. I gave myself one hard rule for the broadside: the target is inside the firing arc or it is not. No gentle falloff, no forgiving curve near the edge. The arc is the arc. If you want to land hits, you have to wheel the whole hull around until the enemy sits squarely in your sights. That single rule is the entire tactical dance: not aiming, but positioning a mountain.

Underneath all of it, I quietly built the foundation that future fights will stand on, then threw ten thousand bodies at it, packed tight, just to see whether it would buckle. It held. None of that touches the game yet. But I now know that when I fly into a field of broken rock and twisted metal someday, the floor will not give out beneath me.

Visual changelog

A debug arrow showing the thrust vector following the ship's bow direction. Push forward and you push toward the bow. Always. Even after a hard turn.

Retrospective

Here is the mistake I dodged today, and only because it ate a week of my life once before: telling the controls to push the ship in the directions the world thinks are forward and up, instead of the directions the ship thinks are. It works fine until the first time you turn. Then every input slowly drifts wrong and you start to lose your mind wondering why. The fix was never tuning. It was a change of heart: the ship is the center of its own universe now, and the cosmos turns around it.

That is when it stopped feeling like a demo. I cut the engines, sat in the dark, and watched a hundred meters of metal coast silently past a planet, going exactly where I had pointed it and nowhere else. I did not want to touch the controls. I just wanted to sit in the chair and let it carry me.
