Three Calls I Made About How The Ship Should Feel
Does the ship dart or does it drift? I want it to drift. Three decisions in a row, all serving that one feeling.

The question under everything
A capital ship does not dart. It does not flick. It is a hundred meters of cold metal hanging in a silence so total you can hear your own pulse, and when you ask it to move, it answers slowly, like waking something heavy. I have known for weeks that one question would decide the whole feel of this game: does the ship dart, or does it drift? I want it to drift. Today I sat in the dark and made three calls in a row, all of them in service of that one feeling.
One: forward means toward the bow
When you push the stick forward, you should be shoving toward the nose of your own ship. Toward the bow you are looking down. Not toward some invisible compass direction painted on the universe that you cannot see and never agreed to.
That sounds obvious. It is a trap. The lazy version feels perfect while the ship sits still, then betrays you the second you turn: suddenly forward is sideways, and the player is fighting their own hands. I have shipped that exact heartbreak before, years ago, and I swore I would never live through it again. So this time forward means forward from the first second, no matter which way the bow is pointed. Turn all you like. The controls stay loyal.
The brake gets the same honesty. I refused to let anything quietly drain the player's speed in the background, because that is a lie the ship tells you: you let go of the stick and your momentum just evaporates. No. Let go and you coast forever, the way real mass coasts. Want to slow down? You ask for it, on purpose, and the ship burns against its own motion to give it back. Drift is the resting state. It stays the resting state.
Two: your guns either point at it or they do not
The big guns sit along the flanks, and I gave them a hard line. The enemy is inside that line of fire or it is not. There is no polite curve where you get most of your damage for being almost lined up. Almost does not count.
I know the forgiving version would feel nicer in the first ten minutes. I cut it anyway. If you can hurt a target without committing to the turn, you will never commit to the turn, and the turn is the entire game. I want you sweating the geometry: which flank is hot, where the kill is, whether you can heel the whole mass around in time. That tension is where flying a warship becomes commanding one.
Three: prove the bones hold weight, before I need them to
Here is the call I almost put off. Right now a few honest lines of my own move the ship just fine, and they will keep being fine for a long while. But the dream is bigger than one ship gliding through empty black. The dream is a battle: a moving capital ship plowing through a storm of debris, every shattered piece knocking and grinding against the hull.
I did not want to discover, six months from now, that the foundation could not carry that weight. So before any of it mattered to the game, I conjured ten thousand objects packed shoulder to shoulder and let them slam together at once, just to see if the floor would hold. It held. There was a small, stupid grin on my face in a dark room at the result. I now know the future is buildable, and I learned it cheap, before a single thing was leaning on the answer.

What I left for later, on purpose
I did not hand movement over to all that machinery today. That is a later switch, the one I flip when combat and debris arrive and the ship needs to be shoved around by forces, not just by me. Today was only about being certain the ground is there when I step onto it.
Three calls, each one made before the game needed it, so when the game does need it, the feeling is already decided and I get to spend the energy on the fun. And the feeling I am chasing is this: you, alone in the chair, easing a hundred meters of patient steel into a turn, the stars wheeling slow past the bow, the whole heavy thing finally yours to command.
