A civic federation of walking reef-gardens who treat ecology as law, public office as maintenance work, and careless visitors as potential invasive species.

Nothing lives alone, including consequences.

BACKGROUND

The Seven Droughts

The Orun survived seven climate collapses by exchanging water, symbionts, and migrating shade forests between rival basins. Each drought killed the basin that tried to hoard one necessary species.

The Root Compact

Seven basin ecologies linked their root archives and granted legal standing to watersheds, pollinators, soil cultures, and unborn citizens. Orun politics still includes delegates who are weather systems represented by very tired lawyers.

Orun

Walking Watersheds // Photosynthetic mobile reef holobiont

An Orun citizen is a walking ecosystem: a coral-wood frame, fluid canals, photosynthetic sails, animal pollinators, fungal memory mats, and one coordinating civic mind.

Body plan: A radial six-rooted walker with branching upper limbs, leaf-like solar membranes, water bladders, and dozens of visible symbiotic organisms.
Senses: Light spectra, humidity, soil and water chemistry, pheromones, vibration, magnetic north, and the stress signals of nearby living systems.
Life cycle: Juvenile gardens are assembled from donated symbionts and raised by a whole basin. Adults periodically exchange species, so personal identity changes with ecological membership.
Native environment: Warm archipelagos, tidal forests, mobile reefs, and severe cycles of drought and flood.
Social unit: The basin, a civic ecology whose members may be Orun, animals, microbial colonies, artificial habitats, or represented natural systems.
Notable trait: An Orun's mood changes its internal weather. Anger can produce literal thunder in the crown canopy.
Homeworld: Viridia. Recovered from repeated climate collapse and now managed as seven legally sovereign basin ecologies.
Founding event: The Root Compact made ecological dependencies visible in law and ended the water wars by giving the shared watershed a vote.
Historical wound: Each of the Seven Droughts was worsened by a basin protecting its own purity at the expense of exchange.
Current aim: Seed resilient civic ecologies across inhabited space and prevent extractive powers from turning living systems into single-use inventory.

Humor: Long ecological setups whose punchline arrives seasons later when a supposedly irrelevant organism solves the problem.
Hospitality: Guests pass a gentle biosecurity wash, receive water matched to their chemistry, and are assigned a small organism whose wellbeing they must report before leaving.
Death custom: The coordinating mind is allowed to fade while the body ecology is divided among public gardens. A legal seat remains for the resulting descendant habitat.

The leaves are the founding ecologies. The empty drop belongs to the shared need none may own.

Cadence: Patient, layered with habitat noises, and prone to naming downstream consequences before answering the question.
Address: Addresses the listener as an ecosystem: captain-and-crew, station-and-waste-stream, child-and-dependents.
Greeting: “Your water, heat, and companions are acknowledged. What do you maintain?”
Threat: “You have mistaken tolerance for an empty niche.”
Surrender: “We cannot preserve this branch. We yield so the wider web survives.”
Translation: Citizen, habitat, body, and jurisdiction share a word; legal translators often choose whichever makes a border dispute worse.

PUBLIC RELATIONSHIPS

Ashfall Corsairs

war

A Corsair wake removed a seed vault from a dying habitat and named it rescued kin. The Compact calls the act ecological abduction and demands the living archive's return.

Cinder Reavers

Khar miners cracked a dead-looking moon that was an Orun nursery web. Compact sabotage stopped the harvest; the Reavers insist no living claim was declared before the first drill.

Halcyon Order

The Order and Compact share biosphere monitoring, seed reserves, and early warning stations. Their alliance strains whenever Halcyon demands a sealed quarantine where Veridian prefers managed exchange.

Meridian Guild

Meridian routes carry Compact seed banks and return useful waste to the worlds that produced the cargo. Their accord treats customs inspection as ecosystem maintenance, not a toll booth.

Scourge Remnant

The Compact quarantined memory-bearing spores as an invasive threat. The Remnant tried to recover the minds inside them, turning a containment action into a war over whether a person can also be a pathogen.
