Cinder Reavers

Nomadic furnace clans of pressure-born aliens who eat reactor slag, court by surviving explosions, and consider a threat dishonest unless it includes a blast radius.

Say it hot or do not say it.

BACKGROUND

The Cooling

The Khar evolved inside magma blisters beneath Vuld's crust. When offworld miners drained the mantle for fuel, entire brood chambers cooled into tombs. Survivors seized the extraction fleet and learned to carry their nurseries inside shipboard furnaces.

The First Overpressure

The clans ended their civil war by sealing every claimant inside one failing reactor hall. Those who repaired it together emerged as the first Furnace Moot; those who fought over rank became part of the coolant problem.

SPECIES & ORIGIN

Khar

Those Under Pressure // Lithic endothermic pressure organism

Khar are flexible mineral sacs filled with superheated salts, armored by plates they grow from whatever metals they eat. Their emotions visibly change internal pressure and surface glow.

Body plan
A barrel torso on four piston legs, two heavy tool arms, a crown of pressure vents, and a face made from heat-sensitive pits rather than eyes.
Senses
Heat gradients, vibration, magnetic fields, metal chemistry, and pressure waves. Cold objects are effectively invisible unless they move.
Life cycle
Clans fuse mineral paste into brood-stones, then wake juveniles with a carefully staged reactor surge. Adults grow denser until they choose a final overpressure.
Native environment
High-pressure magma chambers and metal-rich volcanic vents.
Social unit
The furnace clan, defined by the reactor that warmed its brood rather than ancestry.
Notable trait
A Khar can survive brief vacuum by vitrifying its outer salts, but must be reheated with embarrassing tenderness.
Homeworld
Vuld. Geologically dying after centuries of mantle extraction; the surface is a field of abandoned industrial shafts.
Founding event
The seizure of the extraction fleet turned isolated brood chambers into the first mobile furnace clans.
Historical wound
Offworld companies classified living brood chambers as thermal anomalies and cooled them for easier mining.
Current aim
Acquire enough fuel and metal to keep every surviving brood-stone hot, by trade if respected and by raid if delayed.

DIRECTIVES

Directive 1

Keep the Brood Hot

Fuel for a living furnace outranks wealth, territory, and personal survival.

Directive 2

State the Radius

Every threat must name the harm intended and the boundary beyond which noncombatants are safe.

Directive 3

Earn the Scar

Rank follows witnessed endurance and repair under pressure, never inheritance or polished speech.

CULTURE

Likes

  • + Overbuilt engines
  • + Honest insults
  • + Fermented metal salts
  • + Emergency repairs
  • + Anyone who stands close to the furnace

Dislikes & taboos

  • - Cold storage
  • - Remote management
  • - Vague threats
  • - Decorative armor
  • - Meetings without food or danger
  • TABOO // Cooling a brood furnace
  • TABOO // Threatening beyond the declared radius
  • TABOO // Claiming a scar from an unwitnessed event
  • TABOO // Serving purified metal with no slag
Rituals
Striking armor plates together before negotiation // Cooking treaty seals in shared exhaust // Choosing leaders during controlled reactor failures
Humor
Escalating dares with exact engineering constraints. A Khar punchline is often a safety valve opening at the worst possible moment.
Hospitality
Guests are seated near the furnace and given a bowl of hot mineral paste. Asking for it cooler is allowed; pretending it is comfortable is insulting.
Death custom
An elder opens every vent in a final overpressure. The cooled armor is cut into heat shields for the clan nursery.

SYMBOLISM & VOICE

The Furnace Maw

Three black teeth closing around an orange star-coal.

The coal is vulnerable life. The teeth are clan, armor, and declared violence protecting it.

Primary // Oxide red marks metal that has survived heat and is therefore trustworthy.

Secondary // Furnace black honors brood chambers before ignition and the dead after cooling.

Geometry // Three inward wedges around one bright core.

Number // Three, for fuel, pressure, and witness.

Materials // Scale slag // Blackened iron // Heat-cracked ceramic // Exposed pressure pipe

Comms profile

Cadence
Short declarations punctuated by vent clicks and pressure readings.
Address
Names the listener by the hottest machine under their care.
Greeting
Your core holds. Come closer and speak plainly.
Threat
Outer hull only. Thirty breaths. Move your civilians.
Surrender
Pressure spent. We yield the field, not the brood.
Translation
Warm, brave, alive, and expensive share one root word; translators select whichever meaning causes the most paperwork.
