The Guns Are Real Now, and the Hull Knows How to Mend

My ship finally wears guns you could shoot clean off her spine, and when I limp clear of the fight and hold the weave, her heart drinks the reactor dry to knit the wounds closed in violet light.

Dev Log

  • The guns are real matter now: turret banks on the spine, gun rows down the flanks, a lance under the keel, all of it shootable.
  • One trigger fires everything armed. Yesterday's two-trigger scheme died in its first real fight.
  • Plasma found its body: compact violet orbs for mine, furnace orange for theirs, an amber diamond marking where shot and target will meet.
  • The Weave shipped: break away, hold the channel, and the ship's heart knits her wounds closed in violet light.
  • A real settings screen landed, every key rebindable from inside the game, even mid-battle.

Stickers make bad cannons

My ship crossed a line today. Everything you can see on her is now real enough to lose, and for the first time, real enough to win back.

It started with failure, twice. I had already tried to give the fleet its guns two times before this, and both attempts amounted to painting turrets onto the armor. They looked fine from a distance and died the moment I leaned in: flat little props hovering a hair above the hull, decals pretending to be artillery. A gun you cannot shoot off is a sticker, and a sticker on a warship is a lie. Both tries went in the bin, and both times it stung, because from across the void they honestly looked done.

The rule I keep re-learning out here: if you can see it, it has to BE the ship. So today the guns got grown the way everything else on her is grown, as part of the body itself. Gunmetal turret banks along the spine. Gun rows down each flank. Launchers at the shoulders, a long lance riding under the keel. Solid matter, every piece of it, and it obeys the same law as the rest of her flesh: land your fire on a turret and it carves away like any other part of the ship. Theirs, and yes, mine.

When it was done I spent a stupid amount of time doing no work at all, just wheeling my crosshair across the sky and watching the whole deck battery swing to follow it. Grinning at the screen like an idiot. They are not decorations anymore. They are hers.

Only one heart in the sky

Real guns mean real loss, and loss out here keeps a ledger nobody can cheat. Every block I chip off an enemy stays chipped. Anything severed whole is spent forever, dissolved back into the dark. Which is why the other thing that shipped today is the most this-game thing I have ever built.

Pull out of the fight. Go quiet. Hold the weave. Her magical heart starts drinking its power reserve and pulling glowing matter out of the void, knitting the torn hull closed in a stream of violet light that flashes white-hot as each new piece of her lands. It is not free and it is not safe. One enemy hit shatters the spell, so mending is its own kind of flying: find real distance, hold the channel, stay patient while your wounds glow in the dark.

And I made it canon that hers is the only heart in the sky that can do this. Every enemy I wound stays wounded. My ship mends. Battles finally breathe because of it: bleed, break off into the black, knit yourself whole, come back around their flank meaner than you left.

Portraits of her

I ended the night building nothing. I flew out wide of the battle and took portraits instead: the flagship at full burn with an escort hanging off her bow, a broadside mid-thunder, a breach glowing from the inside out. Eight shots of a ship that did not exist a season ago, a hundred meters of armed gunmetal holding perfectly still in all that silence. I keep telling myself the pictures are for the storefront someday. They are not. I just like looking at her. And somewhere out past the next fight, healed over scars she refused to keep, she is waiting for you to take the chair.

The flagship at full burn The flagship at full burn, every engine bell alight, an escort hanging off her bow like a gull beside a whale.

The deck guns grown into the hull The deck guns are part of her body now, gunmetal grown from the spine, and you could shoot every one of them clean off.

Machine gun and plasma firing together One click arms a weapon, one trigger fires everything armed: machine gun and plasma leaving together, paid from the same reactor.

My violet fire crossing their orange Their plasma comes in furnace orange while everything of mine burns violet, so even with fire crossing both ways I know whose shot is whose.

The lasers throwing a web at a fighter swarm Arm the laser slot and it hunts on its own, throwing a web of light at anything brave enough to close.

A breach blown clean through the deck Battle carves for keeps out here: a breach blown clean through the deck, the kind of wound only my ship knows how to close.

The weave gathering before the mend lands Hold the weave and her heart begins to gather, pulling glowing matter out of the void an instant before the mending lands white-hot.
